Executive Director- Victoria L. Hamilton has been the Executive Director of the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture since its inception in 1988. Ms. Hamilton administers the City's $8 million model arts and culture program including the design and development of the arts and culture organizational support program, cultural tourism initiatives, neighborhood arts and festivals programs, public art program, technical assistance and services to artists and arts organizations, as well as cultural planning and policy development. With over thirty years experience as an arts administrator, she was the Executive Director of the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission and Special Projects Coordinator for the Tacoma Arts Commission. Victoria was appointed to be President of the United States Urban Arts Federation in 2006. She served on the executive committee of Americans for the Arts (formerly National Assembly of Local Arts Agencies) was President of the California Confederation of the Arts and Chair of the California Assembly of Local Arts Agencies and was one of California Arts Council's Arts Marketing Institute Fellows in 2003-2004. She has played a leadership role on national and statewide committees and panels in the areas of cultural tourism, leadership, public policy, cultural planning, cultural diversity and grant making. Victoria was honored by the Hotel/Motel Association with the 2006 Golden Key Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Hospitality Industry, by San Diego Art Institute the 2004 Ginger Award for Exceptional Service to the Visual Arts, by the American Institute of Architects San Diego Chapter with the 2004 Michael J. Stepner Community Design Award, the California Arts Council in 2001 for Outstanding Leadership and Contributions to the Local Arts Agency Field, by San Diego Press Club as Headliner of 2000 for Arts Advocacy, in the 1997 Tribute to Outstanding Women From Our Community, and the 1991 Tribute to California Women in Government. Through her leadership the Commission was awarded the ConVisionary Award in 1999 by the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau (ConVis). Ms. Hamilton is currently a member of The San Diego Foundation's Arts and Culture Working Group and an ex-officio member of the NTC Foundation and ConVis Board of Directors. She is a member of the ConVis Marketing Committee, Co-Chair of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce's Arts, Business and Culture Committee and President of the United States Urban Arts Federation. Public Art Program Administrator- Dana Springs serves as the Public Art Program Administrator and joined the staff of the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture in 2000. Ms. Springs is responsible for the development of public art policies and procedures, and the administration of public art projects including those associated with the City’s Capital Improvements Program (CIP) projects and eligible private development projects. She oversees the implementation of the Public Art Master Plan recommendations and provides oversight for the City’s art collection. She also participates in the development and administration of special public art projects such as the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Artwork on SR-94, and the planned redevelopment of downtown’s C Street. Ms. Springs regularly works with architects, landscape architects, artists, engineers, private developers, urban designers and planners to bring public art projects to completion. She is also responsible for facilitating artist selection competitions and for attending community group meetings with the purpose of introducing artists, presenting artwork plans and for gathering community input. Ms. Springs is originally from Orange County and holds a B.A. in Visual Art from UCSD. Program Manager- Gary Margolis joined the Commission for Arts and Culture in August, 2007 and will manage the Organizational Support and Creative Communities San Diego allocation programs, assist with fund development and facilitate special Commission initiatives and standing committees. Gary brings a wide range of creative and administrative experience to his new position having worked for the Nevada Arts Council, the Broward County (Florida) Cultural Division, the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, and the Pittsburgh Jewish Community Center. He comes to the Commission with an extensive background in arts administration in both the public sector and non profit arts management. In addition, Gary has extensive training and experience in the areas of education, research, and evaluation having taught high school in Brooklyn, New York and elementary/middle school in Bamako, Mali (West Africa) as well as working as an evaluation specialist for the Allegheny County (PA) Department of Human Services and as a researcher for the Harvard Family Research Project. Gary has a bachelor’s degree in dramatic art from the George Washington University and a master’s degree in public and international affairs from the University of Pittsburgh. Arts Management Associate- Nigel Brookes joined the Commission staff in 2005. Nigel’s previous experience includes work for City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department as a grant writer and administrator; a trainer and writer for San Diego Consulting Group; as program manager at the Tariq Khamisa Foundation to reduce youth violence; and as a college instructor at San Diego State University and local community colleges. A native San Diegan, Nigel has been studying, writing about, creating, and showing art his entire life. With an increasingly strong attention to surrealism, his current interests are in found and manipulated objects used in site-specific black light installations, and in the often overlapping myths and rituals associated with mask-making. Nigel earned a Masters Degree in Communication from San Diego State University with a research and teaching emphasis in art, philosophy of language, and organizational and cultural theory. He received his BA in Speech, also at SDSU, from which he graduated Magna Cum Laude and earned the 1996 Outstanding Undergraduate Award. E-mail Nigel Brookes at nbrookes@sandiego.gov Public Art Project Coordinator- Christine Jones serves as the Public Art Project Coordinator and joined the staff of the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture in 2006. Ms. Jones is responsible for managing the City’s art collection, processing donations and loans of artwork, and coordinating the maintenance of artworks. She is also responsible for bringing new public art projects to completion and assisting in the administration of the Public Art Program. Ms. Jones holds a B.A. in History of Art and a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Kansas as well as an M.A. in Museum Studies with a concentration in Arts Administration and Education from San Francisco State University. Ms. Jones has 10 years of experience coordinating and overseeing the administration, appraisal, exhibition, public programming, interpretation and development of collections of fine art. Prior to joining the City, Ms. Jones who is a member of the American Society of Appraisers, owned her own art appraisal and consulting firm and held positions at several private art galleries and non-profit art museums namely the San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, and the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco. Linda joined the Commission staff in 1999 after leaving the City Manager's office where she worked for the Deputy City Manager of Finance. Contracts Coordinator- Teresa M. Holm is originally from the Philippines and started working for the City in 1988. Teresa has been with the Commission since 1991. For ten years she served as the Public Art Administrative Assistant. In 2001 Teresa stepped into her new position as Contracts Coordinator. Her primary responsibility is to coordinate and implement the contracts for services process for over one hundred fifty organizations that receive funding through the Commission's Allocations Program each year.
