Harbor Drive Projects

Background

The City of San Diego is working on three water and wastewater infrastructure construction projects along Harbor Drive, between Cesar Chavez Park Way and 32nd Street. These are the Emergency Sewer Project, the Harbor Drive Trunk Sewer Project, and the Water Group Job 525-B. For information about each project, click on the project links above or scroll down below.

1) Emergency Sewer Project

In March 2012, a large truck transporting windmill parts drove over the Harbor Drive median, broke the curb and exposed the existing below ground sewer system. The project will repair and replace the damaged sections, including the pipe, below ground vaults and manholes. It will also reline 440 feet of 48-inch diameter clay pipe and 540 feet of 42-inch diameter clay pipe. City crews also installed a pump and above ground pipe to temporarily divert the sewer flow around the damaged section and restore wastewater service to affected users during construction. Work on this project was complete in September 2012.

2) Harbor Drive Trunk Sewer Project

This project will replace nearly a mile (4,700 linear feet) of existing 39-inch concrete sewer pipe with a 48-inch diameter, plastic-lined concrete pipe. This will help eliminate future sewer main stoppages and sewer spills, while bringing the existing sewer system up to current City standards. Additionally, the project will install curb ramps and slurry seal streets impacted by construction.

Construction Schedule & Normal Work Hours:

Construction on this project began in April 2012 and is anticipated to be complete by August 2013. Normal construction hours are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Sunday.

Cost

The project planning, design, and construction budget is approximately $9 million.

3) Water Group Job 525-B

This project will replace and upsize aging and deteriorating 8- and 16-inch diameter water pipes with new Cement Mortar Lined and Coating (CML&C) Welded Steel pipe. The new pipelines will bring the existing water mains up to modern standards, accommodate the downtown area growth and reduce maintenance requirements.

Size & Type of New Pipes Total Length in Linear feet
16-inch diameter CML&C Water Pipe 4,237
12-inch diameter CML&C Water Pipe 1,041
Size & Type of Pipes to be Abandoned Total Length in Linear feet
16-inch diameter Cast Iron Water Pipe 3,872
8-inch diameter Cast Iron Water Pipe 290
Construction Schedule & Normal Work Hours:

Construction on this project began in March 2012. Major construction activities are complete with street resurfacing anticipated to be complete by October 2013. Normal construction hours are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
