The Neighborhood Prosecution Unit, in partnership with the San Diego Police Department, other agencies, and the community, works to combat crimes that reduce the quality of life in San Diego neighborhoods. These crimes include vandalism, graffiti, prostitution, disturbing the peace, alcohol and drug offenses, and illegal lodging. Neighborhood prosecutors work in targeted neighborhoods side-by-side with police officers and community members on problem-solving initiatives. Neighborhood prosecutors attend community meetings to listen to the concerns of community members. They develop and implement innovative strategies to prevent crime and educate the public. They provide information and training to police officers on Criminal Division issues, and they propose new legislation to enhance the problem-solving efforts. Their goal is to create a more responsive, community-oriented criminal justice system. In addition, the unit has developed and currently manages four problem-solving community courts: Downtown Community Court, Mid-City Community Court, Beach Area Community Court, and Homeless Court. The goal of the unit is to create a more responsive, community-oriented criminal justice system. The unit has been recognized nationally with multiple grant awards from the U.S. Department of Justice.
