Advisory Division

Public Safety/Hiring & Training Section

The Public Safety section does advisory work for the Police Department, Fire-Rescue Department, Office of Homeland Security, Family Justice Center, and the Commission on Gang Prevention and Intervention. Work includes drafting ordinances and resolutions, responding to records requests, appearing at administrative hearings, drafting and reviewing policies and procedures, appearing in court on motions, updating and advising on case law and statutes, advising on the Brown Act, and interacting with other government agencies on regional issues such as emergency disaster preparedness.

Professional Development Program – The City Attorney’s Office has a team that is dedicated to the professional development of the attorneys and support staff. The team coordinates training, including continuing education as required by the California State Bar. Practice groups meet regularly and act as a resource for other attorneys on a variety of topics, such as contracts, land use, personal injury, employment law, and the California Public Records Act.
