Carmel Valley Safe Schools Crossing
Many months ago residents who live near the new Sage Canyon elementary school spoke with Councilman Peters about speeding on Carmel Mountain Road and the danger to children walking to school. The residents felt a stop sign on Carmel Mountain and Trotter Lane would help to reduce the speed along this road as well as provide a safe crossing for school children going to and from school and park each day.
Councilmember Peters, who has two young children, understood the concerns of the parents and contacted local developers and City Staff requesting that they work together to provide a safer street and access to the school and park.
The neighborhood received new stop signs at the intersection a few days before joining the rest of the world on October 2, 2001 in International Walk To School Day. Sage Canyon Elementary was one of four schools in the County to participate in the event. Thanks to the support of the Sage Canyon PTA and community leaders there were scores of school children, parents, and teachers who gathered and walked together to school. Many used the new stop sign as the safe crossing point to reach the school. Councilmember Peters was impressed by the turnout of children and parents and pleased by the support they received from the community and police department.
In a related situation, a Carmel Valley resident asked that Councilman Peters review the intersection of Carmel Grove and Camel Park for an all way stop. This intersection is directly across from Carmel Del Mar Elementary School. It is a very busy intersection and there have been many near misses involving children. Councilman Peters worked with Traffic and Engineering staff who determined that an all way stop should be installed. This all way stop is important for safety and will create more efficient traffic flow during the drop off and picking up hours of the day for the school.
