Saturday, July 27th , Councilmember Scott Peters and Friends of Carmel Valley Dogs opened the Carmel Valley Off-Leash Dog Park at Torrey Highlands Park.
"Friends of Carmel Valley Dogs" was formed several years ago with the intent of opening a dog park in Carmel Valley. The group worked to locate a suitable area for such a park for several years, but was unable to find a site. In 2001 the group approached Councilman Peters with a request to help site a dog park in the community. Responding to their concerns, Councilmember Peters met with the community, Friends of Carmel Valley Dogs, and City Staff and worked to find an appropriate area. In June the City Council unanimously approved the off-leash dog park in Torrey Highlands Park.
Athletic groups, Friends of Carmel Valley Dogs, and the Carmel Valley Community Planning Board all came together to help approve the new dog park. The southern most acre of the park has been fenced to allow dogs to play safely without a leash and not interfere with other park uses.
On July 27th community dog owners joined Councilmember Peters to throw out the first frisbee and celebrate the opening of the new dog park. On Councilmember Peters’ call to, “Release the Hounds,” frisbees were thrown and the dogs were let loose. Dogs and owners alike seemed to enjoy their new grassy expanse.
