Carmel Valley Skate Park

Rendering of Carmel Valley Skate Park

On Friday, April 4, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, Council President Scott Peters and residents of Carmel Valley celebrated the start of construction of a new community skate facility on El Camino Real.

The 33,000 square foot facility includes a three-part “bowl” area, ramps, steps and other surfaces to suit both novice and experienced skaters. The park will also include shaded areas, restrooms, an observation area and enhanced lighting. The property is immediately adjacent to the new Northwestern Police Substation, completed last year.

Peters thanked City staff and community members for their work in approving and designing the skate facility. “This project would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of dozens of City and District One staff members, the Carmel Valley Planning Group, and the many residents and skateboarders who participated in several design forms,” Peters said. “I hope to see you all here again later this year, when we officially open this great community facility.”

3-D Construction will build the facility and is the same company that built the successful Rancho Peñasquitos skate park. Construction should be complete by October of this year. Project design, permitting and construction costs of approximately $3 million are covered by the areas’ Facilities Benefit Assessment, a fund into which project developers pay fees to build infrastructure benefiting the surrounding community.
