Vista Sorrento Parkway Opens Two Years Early!
On January 17, 2003, Councilman Scott Peters, Mayor Dick Murphy and Councilman Brian Maienschein joined business and community leaders for the opening of Vista Sorrento Parkway, two years ahead of schedule. Through a creative partnership between the City of San Diego and a local developer, the City was able to accelerate the completion of a vital link in the planned circulation infrastructure for the Sorrento Valley area.
The four-lane road will serve as a parallel arterial street to Interstate 5 where it is most congested. The opening of Vista Sorrento Parkway is expected to reduce traffic at the 5/805 merge by 27,400 vehicle trips per day.
"Getting this road done early is about improving the quality of life in the north city. It will allow parents to get home to their kids more quickly, emergency vehicles to have an alternative access, and provides better circulation for the whole region," said Councilman Peters.
In October 2001, the San Diego City Council unanimously passed a resolution directing the City Manager to execute the cooperation agreement that made the early completion of Vista Sorrento Parkway a reality.
"This area has become the largest employment center in the region and is also plagued with some of the worst traffic. It is important that we work to be effective by using creative strategies like this one to build the infrastructure that is planned, so that employees can make it to and from work each day without huge losses in productivity or lossed time with family," noted Councilman Peters.
