Clearing the Throat! La Jolla Parkway and Torrey Pines Road Intersection Completed!
On September 10, 2003 Mayor Dick Murphy and Councilman Scott Peters declared the intersection of La Jolla Parkway and Torrey Pines Road officially open. The reconfiguration of the intersection was a project unanimously recommended by a 1996 Mayoral task force on parking and traffic issues in La Jolla. That recommendation languished for several years until Councilman Peters made it his number one infrastructure priority for La Jolla. The intersection project was completed early and has been providing traffic relief for La Jolla commuters since early August. (Read Councilman Peters remarks from the ceremony.) (PDF: 10K)
The project reconfigured the worst choke point and second most congested intersection in San Diego. The intersection currently handles over 70,000 average daily trips. The reconfiguration is projected to reduce traffic delays by 50%. Anecdotal evidence shows that it is working very well.
The project realigned the La Jolla Shores Drive/Torrey Pines Road and La Jolla Parkway (formerly Ardath Road) intersection by constructing medians on Torrey Pines Road and La Jolla Parkway, and by closing the Ardath road access road. Hidden Valley Road was realigned with the new intersection. (See a map of the intersection.)
The project also provided the opportunity to replace 80 year old water and sewer pipelines. The project replaced 1,600-feet of water main, relocated approximately 1,200-feet of water main, relocated 4,700-feet of sewer main, and used trenchless technology to rehabilitate 1,200-feet of sewer main. The water and sewer improvements were completed during the road reconstruction to avoid having to tear up streets twice, and minimize disruptions to neighboring residents.
At the event Councilman Peters said, "This is a great day for the quality of life in La Jolla. This project will get us home to our families more quickly and allow our friends and customers to visit more easily. This is a great success!" (View more photos from the event.)
