Coastal Public Art Project
In an effort to add beauty to environmental protection, Councilman Peters and
Councilman Zucchet secured $40,000 in funds to add artistic elements to the 21
utility boxes that will control new low-flow storm water diversion systems
along the San Diego coastline from Torrey Pines to Pt. Loma.
The funding has allowed the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture
to conduct a statewide search for an artist to create pieces of art along the coast.
The goal is to create original works of art that are integrated into the beach
environment. This may mean a historic beach surf trail, ocean creature inspired
thematic pieces or other things the artist, judges and community decide to
incorporate into the pieces.
The Commission is consulting with 20 community groups within Council Districts
One and Two.
The community groups have selected three respected California artists to submit
original concepts. The next step will be the selection of a single artist out
of a finalist group. That decision will take place in November of 2004.
