New Fields at Torrey Pines Elementary
In July of 2001 Councilman Peters joined La Jolla business and community leaders, Park and recreation staff and La Jolla Youth Inc. for the groundbreaking for the new fields at Torrey Pines Elementary. As a youth sports coach and La Jolla parent, Councilman Peters has made increasing recreation space a top priority. Turfing the dirt field at Torrey Pines Elementary was a project that Scott Peters worked on as a community activist before becoming a member of the City Council, and has been pleased to be able to be effective as an elected leader in getting this project done for the children of La Jolla.
On December 1, 2002 Councilman Peters was joined by La Jolla families at the annual "Pizza Bowl" where he dedicated five new sports fields at Torrey Pines Elementary. La Jolla Youth Inc. raised and then donated $300,000 to design and construct 80,000 square feet of turf for soccer, softball and baseball. La Jolla Youth will maintain the fields at an annual cost of $30,000 under an innovative partnership with the City of San Diego and the San Diego Unified School District. Councilman Peters commends the donors and community volunteers who put in so much time and effort to improve the quality of life of La Jolla children. This is a project that would not have happened without the creative and generous efforts of friends and neighbors, and it has been Councilman Peters pleasure to support it.
