Adobe Bluffs Tree Planting
On November 16, 2002 Mayor Dick Murphy and District 1 Councilman Scott Peters were joined by the Rancho Penasquitos community to kick off the Mayor's "Community Forest Initiative." The initiative calls for the planting of 5,000 trees per year in San Diego for the next 20 years, resulting in a total of 100,000 trees. Adobe Bluffs elementary was chosen as the first site in a day-long arbor day event that saw trees planted in all eight council districts in the City.
In September, Councilman Scott Peters spoke to the 2nd and 3rd grade classes at Adobe Bluffs Elementary, and the students said that they would like to see more trees planted around their school. Responding to the requests of the children, Councilman Peters chose to begin the community forest initiative at Adobe Bluffs Elementary. Twelve pine and Ash trees were planted in the front and along the perimeter of the school. Students from Adobe Bluffs Elementary, wearing tree hats, pitched in to help plant the trees around their school.
Cheerleaders and the marching band from West View High School entertained and rallied the crowd of about 75 parents and children who attended the event, and Mayor Murphy called it one of the best community turnouts he had ever seen.
Thanks to everyone who helped out with the event!
