Camino Del Sur Interchange / SR56 Segment Opening
On Saturday, April 5, 2003 Councilman Scott Peters was joined by Mayor Dick Murphy, Councilman Brian Maienschein, Scott Sandstrom with Western Pacific Housing, and representatives of CalTrans and SANDAG for the opening of the Camino Del Sur Interchange and opening of the new segment of the SR56 from Black Mountain Road to Camino Del Sur. The ceremony was followed by "Play Day on the 56," where residents in the area were invited to walk and ride bikes on the new segment of the SR56 freeway before it is opened to traffic.
Through a creative public / private partnership the Camino Del Sur interchange was opened 3 years ahead of its scheduled opening in 2006. Councilman Peters recognized the need to open this interchange to relieve traffic on Black Mountain Road and provide better access to Westview High School. By working with the Mayor's Freeway Congestion Strike Team, and members of the Torrey Highlands Development Community, the City was able to get the development community in the area to advance $40 million to move up the completion of the interchange by 3 years.
The new interchange and segment of the SR56 are expected to take as much as 50% of the traffic off of Black Mountain Road and greatly enhance the quality of life in Rancho Penasquitos.
