New Speed Equipment for Rancho Peñasquitos
On May 8, 2002, Councilmember Scott Peters presented a new speed trailer and radar gun to the Northeastern Police Division in Rancho Peñasquitos. Councilmember Peters was joined by members of the police department, residents of Rancho Peñasquitos and members of the development community who generously donated $20,000 for the purchase of the new equipment which will be dedicated for use in Rancho Peñasquitos.
Since the opening of the "loop road" (Black Mountain Road) to the west three years ago, and with the increase in construction activity to the north and west of the community, Rancho Peñasquitos has seen a significant increase in traffic volumes and speed. Councilmember Peters has been working with police, residents and developers in the area to find creative strategies to reduce speeds and enhance safety for pedestrians.
"This is a great day for the residents of Rancho Peñasquitos," said Councilman Scott Peters. "The generous contributions made by Santaluz, Western Pacific, Taylor Woodrow and Black Mountain Ranch, will assist the police in their speed enforcement efforts, which will help to improve the quality of life for residents by decreasing traffic speeds and enhancing both pedestrian and vehicular safety."
Additional traffic relief for Rancho Peñasquitos will also come three years early when the Camino Ruiz interchange with SR 56 opens in September of 2002. Traffic estimates show that the new interchange should result in a nearly fifty percent decrease in traffic volumes on Black Mountain Road, which runs through the heart of this residential community. The early opening was made possible through a creative public-private partnership between the City, Caltrans and several developers.
"By working together we can make these creative solutions happen," said Peters. "Our multi-pronged approach of road enhancements, new road building, increased enforcement and public awareness, shows we are taking a comprehensive approach to solving this difficult problem. Ultimately, though, it is up to the individual driver to slow down and be courteous to fellow citizens."
