San Diego’s coastline is an important economic and environmental concern for all residents in San Diego. Coastal infrastructure investments are critical to San Diego's future and economic well-being.
City Councilman Scott Peters is dedicated to improving San Diego’s coastline. On Friday, July 22 Councilman Scott Peters will celebrate the completion of the North Torrey Pines Bridge.
The North Torrey Pines Bridge replaces an old bridge that was structurally and seismically inadequate. “The goal of the project was to provide a safer bridge which will last for many years. We were successful in designing a bridge that improves safety and aesthetics for residents and visitors alike. Our coastline defines our quality of life in San Diego, and I am dedicated to protecting and preserving these coastal treasures,” said Peters.
The old bridge was deemed by biologist to be “killing the lagoon” due to inadequate tidal flushing. The new bridge with 70 plus less tiers will lead to a more natural tidal flushing and longer lasting and healthier tidal lagoon. Other benefits of the new bridge include new bike lanes on each side, improved views of the ocean, and improved tidal flushing of Los Penasquitos Lagoon and new storm water controls to prevent car pollutants from entering the lagoon.
