Completed Projects/Issues - Other Projects
2001 Accomplishments
Alpha Project Canyon Clean up
With help from the Alpha Project, we were able to clean-up and clear
the canyon near Decoro Street in University City. In addition to
being a major fire hazard, the canyon had recently become a target
for illegal dumping and graffiti. The area has been cleaned up and
is once again safe for pedestrian traffic.
Initiated University City Banner Program
Residents of University City were able to find a sponsor to provide
banners that will be placed on light poles throughout Governor Drive,
Genessee Avenue and Regents Road. International City Bank agreed
to donate $10,000 for community banners in South University City.
Extended U.C. Library Hours
Councilmember Peters worked with his colleagues on the Council to
approve a City budget that will increase funding for the University
City Library on Governor Drive to extend hours of operations to
8:00 pm Monday-Thursday.
Approved Stop Light for Stadium Street
After receiving many letters from the Spreckels Elementary PTA,
Girl Scouts and concerned parents requesting that a stop light be
installed at Stadium Street, Councilmember Peters worked with the
City Manager to make it happen. This stop light is should be operational
in the Spring of 2002
Recycling Programs in UC
Doyle and Standley Recreation Centers have continually been in the
top five revenue generators for recycling programs in the City of
San Diego. District 1 had three of the top seven in the last report.
Opened I 805/Nobel Interchange
After many years the opening of the I-805/ Nobel Drive interchange
and extension of Nobel Drive became a reality in 2001. The interchange
provides another outlet for University City traffic congestion.
The connection between Nobel Drive and Miramar Road, was opened
on February 1, 2002.
New Median at Agee
Councilman Scott Peters worked with the Community to use a combination
of community development impact fee money coupled with a dollar-for-dollar
City match to replace the orange pylons with a concrete median at
Agee Street in South University City.
Beth Israel Synagogue Opens
Councilman Scott Peter worked closely with Temple Beth Israel and
City staff to move the project through the permitting process in
a timely manner so that they could open the new school on time.
The dedication ceremony was held in November and the Synagogue is
a welcome addition to the University City area.
University City Traffic Forum
Councilman Peters moderated a forum in UC so that the community
and City staff could discuss area traffic concerns and develop creative
solutions to these problems.
Nobel Park & Nobel Library
Created and facilitated the Nobel Park and Library Project Focus
Group. This group has representation from all interested parties
in the University City community, including city staff, UCPG, library
staff, Renaissance residents, and other stakeholders. UCPG recently
approved the Focus Group's recommended design.
