University City Fire Service Plan Amendment
University City is served by a police substation and fire station located on Eastgate Mall between Regents road and Genesee Avenue. In 1997, the Fire department assumed primary response to medical emergencies in addition to fire protection which created capacity constraints to existing fire service. Concerned about poor response times in University City, the Fire Department began working with Council President Scott Peters to identify the fire protection needs within the community.
In order to meet National Fire Protection Association standards and assure adequate coverage, the Fire Department identified the need for additional fire stations in several areas of the University community. Addressing the Fire Department concerns, Council President Scott Peters worked with the community on initiating an amendment to the land use plan that addressed the police and fire protection needs within the University City community.
On March 21, the City Council directed Planning Department staff to prepare an amendment to the University Community Plan that adds language stating the need for additional fire stations to assure adequate response to the population. The resolution number is R-301307 and date of final passage was March 24, 2006.
The City of San Diego's Planning Department is currently in the process of drafting language to be added to the University Community Plan. The 2nd draft was presented to UCPG at a public forum on June 13, 2006. For more information, contact Dan Monroe at (619) 236-5529, or dmmonroe@sandiego.gov
