On, Saturday, October 9, Councilman Scott Peters joined UC families
to celebrate the completion of the second new playground in UC,
at UC Gardens Park. The crowd celebrated the grand opening of the
new UC Gardens/McElroy Field playground with juice, cookies and
a ‘first slide’ ceremony. “We are not only celebrating
a new playground, we are creating memories for families living in
University City,” said Peters.
The new prehistoric themed playground includes a huge climbing rock
located in the center of the playground, a large Tyrannosaurus Rex
slide, a Stegosaurus slide, swings and safety surfacing that allows
children with disabilities to play.
To complete the project, Councilman Peters identified three partially
funded projects and asked the community to prioritize them. The
community chose the UC Gardens playground project as their top priority,
and Councilman Peters worked to combine funding sources from the
three partially funded projects to complete the top ranked playground.
Councilman Peters also successfully completed upgrades to the Standley
Park Playground in 2002, installed a new water fountain in UC Village
Park and is working to build a new playground at UC Village Park.
South UC families who use McElroy Field/UC Gardens park for sports
now have a new safe place to play, and are anticipating a new public
bathroom planned for UC Gardens/McElroy Field expected to be installed
in 2005.
