Funds Approved: To Keep Swanson Pool Open!
On March 6, 2006 the San Diego City Council voted to use $72,719 in Proposition 40 state bond money to keep Swanson Pool open this Spring. Council President Scott Peters proposed the funding arrangement after hearing from University City residents concerned about the pools closure.
Originally scheduled to be closed between March and June due to budget cuts, Swanson Pool is used by more than 2000 community members each month, for recreation, swimming lessons and life safety courses. The pool will remain open between March 6 and May 14, and will close from May 15-June 11 for regular maintenance and repair.
The facility will re-open to the public on Monday, June 12.
Im pleased that my council colleagues recognize how important Swanson Pool is to families and seniors, said Council President Peters, and I thank them for their unanimous vote to keep this valuable community asset open.
Mayor Jerry Sanders thanked the council for their resourcefulness, and expressed his support for the project. I hope the council will continue to look for these kinds of funding opportunities to preserve popular services in their districts.
The Prop 40 allocation was approved 6-0 by the San Diego City Council, with Councilman Jim Madaffer and Council President Peters absent. Both are attending the American Public Transportation Association legislative conference in Washington, D.C. Proposition 40, also known as the Clean Air, Safe Parks and Coastal Protection Act, was approved by 56.9% of California voters in March of 2002.
