On February 1, 2002 Councilman Peters was joined by members of
the University City Planning Group, the Marine Corp. and local residents,
to celebrate the completion of the Nobel Drive/I-805 Interchange.
The project, jointly proposed by the City, Caltrans, and the FHWA,
will alleviate traffic congestion in the University City community,
specifically along La Jolla Village Drive / Miramar Road. The project
opened in two phases. In 2000, commuters were given an alternative
route to get in and out of the University City area with the opening
of the Nobel Drive ramps on the I 805. In early 2002, the final
leg of the project was completed with the extension of Nobel Drive
to Miramar Road. This project is unique in that it was almost entirely
funded by the University City Facilities Benefit Assessment, fees
collected from the projects that have been developed in the University
City area. The community worked long and hard to make this project
happen, and in it's entirety, this project is expected to take over
55,000 daily trips off of over-stressed streets in this area.
"If you have ever tried to get onto the I-805 South from La
Jolla Village Drive during the evening rush hour, you know just
how acute the problem has become", remarked Councilman Peters. "With the completion of the Nobel Drive/I 805 Interchange and the extension to Miramar Road, we provide a vital link and alternate route for those who live, work and recreate in the University City and Miramar areas."
