Via Alicante Storm Drain
The Storm Drain Pipe under Via Alicante was beginning to fail, and emergency repair was necessary before a sinkhole developed along Via Alicante. A temporary fix was put in place, and the replacement project was underway before the record setting rainfall of 2005.
City Staff replaced 123 feet of 15 foot diameter steel storm drain pipe that failed due to corrosion, and today a new 14 foot by 14 foot reinforced concrete box culvert lies under the full width of Via Alicante near Gilman Drive. The replacement project began in August 2004, and was completed before the record setting rainfall of 2005.
The APWA, an association dedicated to providing high quality public works goods and services, presented the City of San Diegos Engineering and Capital Projects Department with the 2005 Utilities Honor Award for their great work on this project.
