Economic Development and Strategies
Since joining the City Council in 2008, Sherri has advocated for a standing committee focused exclusively on San Diego’s local economy. In December 2011, the Economic Development & Strategies Committee was created, and Sherri’s Council colleagues voted unanimously to have her serve as chair of this new committee. The focus of this committee is to craft a long-term strategy for San Diego’s economy while looking for immediate ways to cut through the city’s tangle of red tape.
Currently, the committee is doing extensive outreach with the business community to develop a long-term business strategy for San Diego. Other key items the committee is working on are regulatory relief, improving the city’s web functions so that forms and payments are fully automated and a workforce development initiative.
Sherri plans to continue outreach efforts in order to deliver a “Business Plan for San Diego” by the end of the year. She also will focus on her workforce development “Connecting to Careers” initiative, which is designed to help close San Diego’s skills gap. Sherri is working with businesses and education and training providers to ensure that workforce development is a key tenet of the city’s economic development strategy.
