Livable, Walkable and Sustainable Communities

Investing in Bike and Pedestrian Infrastructure

As an avid biker, Kevin is committed to creating safe and accessible bike infrastructure throughout San Diego.

Bayshore Bikeway: A World-Class Bike Facility around San Diego Bay

Kevin, as a member of the Bayshore Bikeway Committee at SANDAG, worked hard to make improvements to the bike route around the San Diego Bay. The Bayshore Bikeway is a 24-mile bicycle facility around the San Diego Bay. At this time, 13 miles of bicycle paths are in use on the Bikeway, and the remainder of the path consists of on-street sections designated as either bicycle lanes or bicycle routes. SANDAG is developing additional improvements to the Bayshore Bikeway based on the Bayshore Bikeway Plan to improve the bikeway and develop a continuous Class I bike path that would allow bicyclists to ride all the way around San Diego Bay on a dedicated path away from city streets.

Community Bikeshare Programs

Kevin collaborated with former Mayor Jerry Sanders to implement an innovative public-private partnership between the City and Deco Bike, a national bikesharing company. Without any cost to taxpayers, approximately 220 bikeshare stations with bikes available to the public will be installed across the City to encourage alternatives to motorized public transportation or private vehicles, thereby reducing traffic congestion, noise and air pollution.

Completing the Mission Bay Pedestrian Path

Kevin also played an integral role, first as the Chair of the Mission Bay Park Committee, and later as a Councilmember, in bringing to fruition the Rose Creek Pedestrian Bridge. The bridge completes the bike path around Mission Bay. Kevin worked to have the City dedicate this bridge in honor of former Councilmember Mike Gotch, who worked tirelessly during his tenure to increase public access to Mission Bay Park.

Smart Growth and Sustainable Practices

Installation of Electrical Charging Stations

Kevin was proud to the support the installation of 117 electrical vehicle charging stations across 27 locations at parks, libraries, recreations centers, and streets throughout San Diego.

Innovative Car Sharing Programs

Kevin has always supported the expansion of innovative car sharing programs such as the Car2go partnership to reduce congestion and encourage sustainable practices.

Community Gardens, Urban Agriculture and Local Access to Sustainable Food

Kevin was proud to support legislation to allow residents to start community gardens without having to obtain an expensive permit. These improved regulations allow greater access to healthy, local, and sustainable food.
