FRYE NAMED 2001 ENVIRONMENTALIST OF THE YEAR BY THE SURF INDUSTRY MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION

San Diego -- The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) has named San Diego City Councilmember Donna Frye Environmentalist of the Year 2001.
“It’s an incredible honor to be recognized by my peers,” Frye stated. “Without the surf community, I would not have been able to accomplish as much as I have with respect to protecting our beaches and bays.
” Recently elected to the San Diego City Council, Donna Frye has been a tireless grassroots environmental advocate and organizer for the past 35 years. Wife of surfboard shaper Skip Frye, Donna has worked persistently on behalf of her community through involvement in numerous local activities. Frye founded Surfers Tired of Pollution (STOP), an organization dedicated to preventing exploitation of the ocean and other natural resources. Currently, Frye is a member of the City of San Diego’s Natural Resources and Culture Committee and the Mayor’s Clean Water Task Force.
"The profound effects of Donna’s perseverance, love of the ocean, wit and humor have educated and inspired people at all levels of society and government to keep our beaches and politics clean," said Waterman’s Ball Board Member Michael Marckx. "I know of no other person anywhere who has worked as long, effectively and passionately to secure economically sound solutions to protect, preserve and improve our quality of life."
Frye will accept her award at SIMA’s 12th Annual Waterman’s Ball to be held at the new St. Regis Hotel in Dana Point, Calif. on Saturday, August 4. Founded in 1989, SIMA is a non-profit organization that serves as an information center and representative body for manufacturers from various facets of America's surf industry.
