Councilmember Frye Kicks Off

Street Safety Campaign Promoting Awareness Through Film

San Diego?Councilmember Donna Frye kicked off the ?On the Streets Where We Live? campaign to promote street safety today in Clairemont.

Frye is partnering with BestFest San Diego Student Film Festival to involve students in identifying problems and creating solutions to traffic related issues. ?On the Streets Where We Live? will be the theme for the Public Service Announcement (PSA) category at BestFest. The sixty-second PSA category is the latest addition to this year?s student film festival, BestFest 2003.

?The most important thing I have found in the community is that the issues people care about most, are basic quality of life issues,? Frye stated. ?When people can?t safely cross their street, that directly impacts their quality of life. I am working with BestFest to get out the word that unlawful drivers need to slow down and respect our neighborhoods.?

?We are excited to work with Councilmember Frye and our other sponsors to promote this grass roots effort to make our streets safe for everyone,? commented Dave Larson, Chairman of BestFest 2003 and President of the Visual Arts Foundation.

College and High School students will participate by creating a PSA that cites a serious problem and provides a plausible solution to traffic related issues. Entries will be rated on theme observance, problem/solution adherence, overall impact and quality of work.

Councilmember Frye will award a total of $5,000 in cash prizes for the PSA category at BestFest 2003. ?When we involve students in identifying problems and creating solutions we have already begun to solve the problem,? Frye stated.

Officially selected films will be screened at BestFest 2003, the San Diego School Channel and Cox Channel 4 Cable. For more information about BestFest San Diego Student Film Festival please contact Dave Larson, Chairman of BestFest 2003 at (858) 449-7085.

Also in attendance were local teachers and students, Police Officers, Firefighters, representatives from Walk San Diego and Race Legal.
