FRYE RELEASES REPORT REVEALING THAT TRIGGERING EVENT IN CHARGERS LEASE HAS NOT OCCURRED

San Diego, California - Today, Councilmember Frye released a report she commissioned from a respected expert in professional sports franchises to determine whether the San Diego Chargers could exercise the "triggering event" in the lease between the Chargers and the City of San Diego. The total cost of the study and report was $2,700.

An essential question for the citizens and elected leadership of the City of San Diego is whether or not the "triggering event" related to the lease with the San Diego Chargers has occurred. If the "triggering event" occurs, the team can seek to renegotiate the lease or leave San Diego.

Earlier this year, before the Mayor formed the Citizens Task Force, Councilmember Frye commissioned a study by an independent outside expert to look at the "triggering event" issue. According to the report by Dr. Mark Rosentraub of Cleveland State University, the "triggering event" has not occurred.

"Spending $2,700 dollars is a small price to pay to provide additional information to the public. If this report saves the taxpayers of San Diego millions of dollars, then it is well worth it," Frye stated. "I am happy to provide the members of the Task Force, and especially the citizens of San Diego with information that will allow them to make better informed decisions," Frye said.

Dr. Rosentraub has studied the economics of professional sports for more than 25 years. He has published two books, approximately 20 academic articles and numerous newspaper columns dealing with the ecomics of sports. He has served as a consultant to several cities and provided testimony to the US Senate Committee on the Judiciary, the US House of Representatives Select Committee on Professional Sports, and numerous state legislature and city and county councils.
