District Six Receives State Grant

Funds will go towards a new Teen Center for Linda Vista

San Diego, California?Councilmember Frye received the great news today that California Governor Gray Davis has decided to allocate $600,000 of Proposition 12 bond funds to the Boys and Girls Club of San Diego for a new Teen Center in Linda Vista. This project is one of only three that were selected in San Diego for the Murray/Hayden Youth Services Grant Program that was established by the Park Bond Act of 2000. This grant program targets areas that are deficient in park and recreation services for youth in low to moderate income urbanized areas.

?The Boys and Girls Club of San Diego County is an exemplary organization that has served the communities of District Six above and beyond expectations,? Frye stated. ?The new addition of the Linda Vista Teen Center is welcomed to fill the void of youth services available to the teen population in San Diego. These programs give our at risk youth the help they need to become productive, educated and healthy young adults.?

The Linda Vista Teen Center will be constructed adjacent to the existing Boys and Girls Club facility. The Teen Center will provide a variety of programs for at risk youth. The facility will have a technology center, music studio, dance studio, counseling center and multipurpose rooms. The construction and furnishing of this facility is estimated to cost a total of two million dollars. Approximately $500,000 is still needed to complete funding. To help fund the creation of the Linda Vista Teen Center, contact Jeff Miller, Sr. Vice President and CAO for the Boys and Girls Club of San Diego, at (619) 298-3520.

?I commend the Boys and Girls Club for their dedication to the development of programs to serve the many needs of the youth in District Six and congratulate them on the receipt of this grant,? commented Frye.
