Frye Breaks Ground on Nature Center

Construction begins on long awaited Tecolote Nature Center Expansion

San Diego... Today, Councilmember Donna Frye broke ground on the Tecolote Nature Center expansion project located in Tecolote Canyon Natural Park. Frye was joined by Ellen Oppenheim, Director of Park and Recreation and Eloise Battle, Chair of the Tecolote Canyon Citizens Advisory Committee to be the first to turn the soil marking the beginning of this long awaited project.

"Tecolote Canyon is one of the greatest natural resources in the Sixth Council District and the City of San Diego," Frye commented. "This groundbreaking is an exciting step bringing us closer to providing a Nature Center that will be able to better educate the public and showcase the Canyon's natural beauty."

Last minute funding shortfalls almost brought the expansion project to a halt. Councilmember Frye was able to secure over $200,000 to make sure the Nature Center expansion project would not face further delays.

The expansion of the Tecolote Nature Center will provide an additional 2,600 square feet. This will include an enhanced patio and restroom facilities. A new classroom will be built adjacent to the current site to provide for school field trips and lectures.

"It took many community volunteers to get us here today," said Frye. "The Tecolote Citizens Advisory Committee was instrumental in seeing this project through, from inception to design. The success of park projects like this is dependent upon the hard work of the community."

The Tecolote Nature Center provides a variety of educational and recreational experiences. The facility offers a number of exhibits on the animal and plant life in the canyon. Reference materials for research on the canyon are also available at the Nature Center. The Park Rangers offer tours and informational lectures about Tecolote Canyon.
