Deputy Mayor and Councilmembers Propose Ballot Measure to Fund Police and Fire Serviceslncrease would be considered in November election San Diego, CA - Yesterday, Deputy Mayor Toni Atkins, Councilmember Michael Zucchet and Councilmember Donna Frye released a memorandum (attached) requesting that the City Attorney draft a ballot proposal for November that would raise San Diego's Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) by 2 1/2 cents. This proposal would be structured differently than Proposition C, which failed in the March 2004 pimary election. Under this proposal, the 2 1/2 cent increase would be temporarily earmarked to fund Public Safety needs, such as deferred maintenance costs for the Police and Fire Departments. The Police Department and the Fire Department would each receive 1 1/4 cent of each dollar from the increased TOT revenue. Attachment (PDF: 32K) # # # |
