Frye Gives Check to Boys and Girls Clubs of Clairemont and Linda VistaCA, San Diego... Today Councilmember Donna Frye handed over a check for $95,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego for much needed improvements to the Clairemont and Linda Vista Branches. Frye has had a long history of making the children of the Boys & Girls Clubs a priority in District Six, having allocated a grand total of $420,000 of Federal Block Grant funds over the past three years. Frye was excited about the announcement saying, "We cannot let these longstanding centers for families and children become dilapidated. I have made a commitment to ensure that District Six communities will be able to depend on the outstanding service of the Boys & Girls Clubs without having to worry about the facilities closing because of unsafe conditions." The Linda Vista Branch first opened in 1955 and is the second oldest Boys & Girls Clubs in San Diego. Not much later, in 1961 the Clairemont Branch opened up its doors and began providing services to the families of Clairemont and beyond. These two older facilities began to need major repairs over the past couple of years. One of Councilmember Frye's first actions when she came into office was to allocate $80,000 to the Clairemont Branch so that they could make repairs to the pool area and to the exterior of the building. "It gives me great satisfaction to be able to help the next generation of leaders grow up healthy and strong," said Frye. "Children need an alternative to being home alone or out on the streets after school and the Boys & Girls Clubs provide a great environment where our children can feel safe." The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego has a long and distinguished history of service to disadvantaged youth dating back to the early 1940's. In 2001, two of the largest Boys & Girls Club Organizations in San Diego (the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Diego and Boys & Girls Clubs United) merged to form the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego. # # # |
