Mission Valley Branch Library
On Saturday, July 20, 2002 Councilmember Frye completed one of her top priorities by opening the long awaited Mission Valley Library. This new library will be a great resource for Mission Valley and surrounding communities. The opening of the Mission Valley Library marks a number of firsts for libraries in San Diego. This is the first library located strategically next to the trolley line so that it is easily accessible. This is also the first library to stay open until 10 o'clock at night.

The new $7 million library is located in Fenton Marketplace. The 19,760-square-foot facility consists of a large community room, two seminar rooms, a computer lab, reading areas, and a children's library. The site has 85 parking spaces and is located adjacent to the Fenton Parkway trolley station making it easily accessible by public transit.

The Mission Valley library will have the longest hours of any of the public libraries in the City of San Diego. This will make it accessible to our working families in the Sixth District. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday; and 2 to 10 p.m., Sunday. More...

Serra Mesa/Kearny Mesa Branch Library
The new 15,250 square foot library is planned to go to construction in 2004 and be completed in 2005. The Architecture is traditional in its elements but current to today's lifestyles and building techniques. The building uses Green Building Technology and recycled materials.

Per the community's request the design borrows on the Mission Revival and turn of the century Craftsman style. The building has two main functions: the community and seminar rooms that can be used for community meetings, children's programs, and the like and the opposite side of the entry lobby which leads into the actual library. A high columned gallery, with clerestory windows will have displays, artwork and feature new or seasonal volumes. Off this central gallery will be a computer lab, reference and study areas. The other side will lead to a children's area. The library will be a magnet for young and old to gather, learn and build community ties.

Balboa Branch Library
In November of 2002 Councilmember Frye allocated $150,000 of District Six infrastructure funds for the expansion of the Balboa Library. The City has begun the bidding process for a design consultant to work on the 1,500 square foot library to replace the existing one at 4255 Mt. Abernathy.

The Friends of the Library for the three Clairemont libraries met a year ago, and determined that an expanded library on Balboa would be their top priority. The existing two libraries on Burgener and Clairemont Drive will be the next improvement to the City's library system District Six.
