Chet Barfield, Council Representative
Chet Barfield was an award-winning career journalist before joining Donna’s team in June 2008. In his 21 years at the San Diego Tribune and Union-Tribune, Chet had a succession of high-profile beats. He covered border and immigration news for the Tribune from 1986 to 1992. After the Tribune’s merger with the San Diego Union, Chet became one of the first and most prominent Indian affairs specialists for any major U.S. newspaper, reporting on Indian tribes and casinos for 15 years until 2007. His work on the reservations earned him a Pulitzer Prize nomination for beat reporting in 2003. In his last year with the U-T, Chet reported on people and neighborhood issues throughout the City of San Diego, providing good background for his new role as a representative for Council District Six. A San Diego resident since 1986, Chet has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Arizona State University. Email: cbarfield@sandiego.gov |
