Peter Kanelos comes to District 6 with more than 17 years of experience dealing with a variety of local policy issues including intergovernmental relations, small businesses, and land use. Prior to joining Team Zapf, his consulting firm represented clients such as the Merchants Payment Coalition, which fought against increases in bank interchange fees, and numerous campaigns including State Senator Ted Gains, and Congressman Dana Rohrabacher. He also spent four years as the Regional Director of Community Affairs for a nationwide retail chain where his expertise with the land development process and environmental regulations, including CEQA, secured entitlements for stores in California and Arizona. Kanelos has also worked as the Program Director for the Resource Conservation District of Greater San Diego, where he focused on water and soil conservation projects and developing watershed management plans for the Carlsbad Watershed Network.
As Lorie's Senior Policy Advisor, Peter is responsible for advising the Councilmember on policy issues coming before the City Council, including regulatory relief, economic development, land use, medical marijuana. He will also serve as the Councilmember's advisor on policy that comes before the Metropolitan Transit System Board and the MTS Taxicab Advisory Committee. Kanelos is a graduate of the University of California, San Diego and holds a bachelorís degree in political science.
