Peter Kanelos comes to District 6 with more than 17 years of experience dealing with a variety of local policy issues including intergovernmental relations, small businesses, and land use. Prior to joining Team Zapf, he spent six years as President and Owner of Hermes Strategy Group, a local consulting firm whose clients include the Merchants Payment Coalition, which fought against increases in bank interchange fees, and numerous campaigns including State Senator Ted Gains, and Congressman Dana Rohrabacher. He also spent four years as the Regional Director of Community Affairs for a nationwide retail chain where his expertise with the land development process and environmental regulations, including CEQA, secured entitlements for stores in California and Arizona. Kanelos has also worked as the Program Director for the Resource Conservation District of Greater San Diego, where he focused on water and soil conservation projects and developing watershed management plans for the Carlsbad Watershed Network.

As Lorie's Senior Policy Advisor, Peter will be responsible for advising the Councilmember on a variety of policy issues including regulatory relief, jobs and the local economy, land use, medical marijuana, and the Council docket. He will also serve as the Councilmember's advisor on policy that comes before the Economic Development and Strategies Committee, San Diego SAFE and the San Diego Abandoned Vehicle Abatement Service Authority.
