Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)

Councilmember Madaffer has headed up the effort to place Automated External Defibrillators or AEDs in City facilities including the Tierrasanta Library, Recreation Center and Mission Trails Regional Park. The City of San Diego recently purchased 40 AEDs and has begun placing them primarily in City buildings and facilities in District 7 as well as lifeguard stations, the City Administration Building and the downtown library.

AEDs save lives. When a person undergoes cardiac arrest, receiving prompt defibrillation significantly increases their chance of survival. Technology has made it possible to produce compact AEDs that are easy to operate. Now it is just a question of ensuring their accessibility and increasing public awareness. The value in having AEDs readily available in government offices, retail centers and other public places where large numbers of people are present is being recognized.
