"Welcome to Allied Gardens" Sign Improvement Project
Drivers entering the community of Allied Gardens now will receive a much nicer greeting thanks to the work of a local Boy Scout. This past May, Doug Rahiser and his volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 51 made significant improvements to the "Welcome to Allied Gardens" sign at the corner of Warring Road and Adobe Falls Road. Doug, who completed the project as part of earning his Eagle Scout rank, made an enormous improvement to the entrance to the community by beautifying the sign that had unfortunately built up some weeds and unwanted shrubbery around it. "One of the adult leaders in my troop actually alerted me to the possibility of this project", Doug said. "The project involved getting plants and dirt donated as well as working with the Allied Gardens Community Council".
The community was eager to help Doug with his project. Gracious local sponsors included "The Plant Man", who donated plants from his shop in Old Town, A-1 Soils, and the Allied Gardens Community Council. Doug and his team beautified the intersection by clearing gravel and weeds in front of the sign. They also put down a new layer of soil and planted some new vegetation. Most importantly all the plants that were used are native to California and therefore require no regular irrigation. The hope is that they will adapt to their new climate, however there is the possibility that they may need some extra attention in periods of persistent drought.
The project took Doug and his crew only two days to complete, but required months of planning ahead of time. What everyone in the area is grateful for is that thanks to Doug's efforts the Allied Gardens Community now has a much more beautiful welcome mat. |
