Councilmember Jim Madaffer Holds Celebration of Undergrounding Work on Streamview Drive Completed

On Saturday, April 2, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. Councilmember Jim Madaffer, community members from Darnall, and representatives from San Diego Gas and Electric, Cox Communications and SBC will come together at 6375 Streamview Drive to celebrate undergrounding work that was recently completed in a festive "pole out ceremony." The pole out ceremony will take out the last pole still standing as part of this conversion process of placing overhead utility lines underground.

In June, 2002, work began to underground the utility lines along Streamview Drive, from 54th Street to College Avenue. The project included the conversion of approximately 7,000 feet of overhead utilities and impacted 189 customers at a cost of approx three and a half million dollars.

"Undergrounding projects are so important to residents of District 7, many of whom live in older communities that are crisscrossed with ugly utility lines. It has such an impact in upgrading the quality of life," said Councilmember Madaffer.

Since 1967, the City of San Diego has been replacing unsightly overhead power and communication lines with safer and more reliable underground systems. Almost 1,000 miles of overhead utility lines remain to be undergrounded and it is estimated that the entire city will be undergrounded over the next twenty to twenty-five years. Approximately thirty to thirty-five miles of overhead lines are undergrounded throughout the city each year.

For more information about the undergrounding activities taking place now and in the future in Council District Seven, call (619) 236-6677. For general information about underground scheduling city-wide, call the Underground Utilities Information Line at (619) 533-3841.
