Emerald-Sponsored Resolution Calls for Overturn of Citizens United
On December 4th, Councilmember Emerald and her colleagues unanimously approved a City Council resolution in support of a Constitutional Amendment to overturn Citizens United.
“One of my primary goals as an elected official is promoting trust in government, and this includes ensuring the electoral process is a fair and open one,” said Emerald, who sponsored the resolution. “With Citizens United, the Supreme Court essentially said that the expenditure of corporate money to influence the electoral process is a form of Constitutionally protected speech—which opens the door to big business deciding who represents us as at all levels of government.”
With the passage of the resolution, San Diego City Council joins other cities in calling on Congress to begin the process of amending the Constitution so that corporations are not entitled to the entirety of protections or ‘rights’ of natural persons.
