City’s Redevelopment Agency Approves North Park Theatre Rehabilitation Deal SAN DIEGO - Revitalization efforts for North Park moved forward today as the City of San Diego Redevelopment Agency approved a development agreement to renovate the historic North Park Theatre. A cornerstone in the community since 1929, the North Park Theatre will once again be a thriving resource for the neighborhood and the San Diego region. “I don’t think I’m being overly dramatic when I say that this is a watershed moment in the history of North Park, and a day which many long-time North Park residents have been dreaming of for quite some time,” said Councilmember Toni Atkins, whose district includes North Park. “But as they say, good things come to those who wait. I believe the timing is perfect for us to take this bold move forward to bring the North Park Theatre back to life.” Since purchasing the theatre in 1990 to ensure preservation of this historic landmark, the City of San Diego has committed significant financial and technical assistance toward other revitalization and community enhancement efforts. As part of this renewal, the The City’s agreement with developer Arnold G. “Bud” Fisher, operating under the name North Park Theatre, LLC, brings more than 30 years of experience in rehabilitating historic buildings in San Diego to this project. Fisher and the performing arts community are also contributing $2.6 million to the renovation’s estimated $5.9 million cost. Renovations will include remodeling the theatre to accommodate 800 seats, a new theatre entrance and marquee, and interior improvements such as air conditioning, heating, and lighting. The theatre will feature 5,800 square feet of retail space on the ground floor and 6,700 square feet of office space on the second floor. Also approved are 70-75 off-street parking spaces, with the possibility of an additional 400 spaces in a new parking structure. A 150-day review period has been established for the Redevelopment Agency to determine the feasibility of the parking structure. The City’s Redevelopment Agency will be investing $3.4 million, which will include the purchase of the theatre (redevelopment funds to pay back the City for the original purchase), a seismic retrofit and a surface parking lot. Originally a single screen motion picture theatre that accommodated approximately 1,200 seats, the North Park Theatre was once one of the most profitable of the Fox West Coast movie theatre chain. In 1975, when the commercial use of the theatre was discontinued, the Horizon Christian Fellowship Church occupied the property until 1986. It was deemed unsafe in 1989 and has been standing vacant ever since. # # #
