NASSCO Job Fair To Provide Training, 400 Jobs
City, State Join Company to Help Fill Jobs
SAN DIEGO – The National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO), in collaboration with the City of San Diego’s Community and Economic Development Department, San Diego Workforce Partnership, and state Employment Development Department, is sponsoring a job fair anticipated to fill over 400 new jobs.
The job fair will take place Saturday, November 9th, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and is targeted specifically toward welders and shipfitters. On-the-spot interviews will be conducted, with eligible candidates able to enroll in a paid training program that ranges from basic to intermediate skill levels, and teaches participants applications in the latest shipbuilding technology. Starting pay for the training program is $9.04, which increases to $11.45 after completion of the six to eight week course. (Journeyman rate up to $17.07).
“NASSCO is pleased to be adding to its skilled labor shipbuilding workforce here in San Diego,” said Dick Vortmann, president of NASSCO. “We greatly appreciate the assistance of the City of San Diego and the state of California in filling these important manufacturing jobs.”
The event will be held at the NASSCO shipyard site, located at 2798 Harbor Drive and 28th Street, in the parking lot at Gate Six. This is an excellent opportunity to match knowledgeable employees with jobs that fill a very specific and prevalent need in San Diego. It is anticipated that over 400 new jobs will be filled by January, setting the stage for another such training/employment program to be held next year.
NASSCO is hiring new workers to assist in the production of four state-of-the-art British Petroleum double-hull oil tankers for use in delivering Alaska North Slope crude oil to British Petroleum’s U.S. West Coast refineries. Construction on the ships began this summer and will continue through 2005.
