Redevelopment Agency Holds Workshops for Property Owners and Tenants in College Community Redevelopment Area

SAN DIEGO – The City of San Diego Redevelopment Agency, through the Community and Economic Development Department, will hold a series of community meetings for property owners, business owners and residential tenants potentially affected by The Paseo development, a joint redevelopment project between the Agency and the San Diego State University Foundation.  The meetings are designed to provide an open forum for property owners and tenants to obtain information, discuss property rights under redevelopment law and address legal, financial and environmental issues surrounding the proposed mixed-use development.

The two meetings will be held on two consecutive days at the following location:
Times:             Wednesday, May 19th (for Property Owners) and Thursday, May 20th (for Tenants and Business Owners), from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Place:              Faith Presbyterian Church, 5075 Campanile Drive, San Diego, CA 92115, Faith Family Center Room

In addition to Redevelopment Agency staff, environmental and acquisition attorneys and relocation consultants will be on hand to answer questions and provide information regarding the Agency's proposed property acquisition process for the redevelopment project.   The Redevelopment Agency will continue to seek public input regarding the project before making a recommendation to the Redevelopment Agency/City Council to approve of The Paseo Disposition and Development Agreement, as well as the Relocation and Housing Replacement Plans.

The Paseo is a proposed $275 million mixed-use redevelopment project designated a smart growth City of Villages Pilot Project by the city of San Diego.   The Paseo project is expected to house 1,400 SDSU students in 461 apartments, and provide more than 1,000 new jobs in the commercial portion of the project, including offices, a multiplex movie theater, retail shops, restaurants, and service-oriented businesses.   The SDSU trolley station, a Paseo Park, public art and a 1,950-space underground parking garage serve the project, which would be scheduled for a fall 2007 opening.

The City of San Diego Redevelopment Agency eliminates blight from designated areas, as well as achieves the goals of development, reconstruction and rehabilitation of residential, commercial, industrial, and retail districts.  Redevelopment is one of the most effective ways to breathe new life into deteriorated areas plagued by social, physical, environmental or economic conditions that act as a barrier to new investment by private enterprise.  The City of San Diego Redevelopment Agency consists of three divisions: the City Redevelopment Division (which provides overall agency management and is housed in the City of San Diego Community and Economic Development Department), the Centre City Development Corporation and the Southeastern Economic Development Corporation.
