City’s "6 to 6" Program To Benefit From Local Charity For years, San Diego’s "6 to 6" Extended Day School Program has been providing before and after school activities to families that need it most. But on Saturday, August 27th, the public will participate in a fun and creative event that will provide additional resources to the popular program. The 32nd Annual Midnight Madness Fun Bike Ride, sponsored by the Uptown Optimist Club, is a 20-mile evening bike ride around San Diego Bay. This year a portion of the donations will be given to assist the "6 to 6" program school site coordinated through the YMCA in addition to the numerous youth teams and organizations to whom the Optimists traditionally donate. The event officially begins at 8 pm in the south lot of the County Administration Building at 1600 Pacific Highway with music, food and fun. Costume and bike-decorating contests begin at 10 pm and the ride begins at midnight. This year's ride will include individual riders and team entries in the new Ride-a-thon category. Prizes will be awarded to the individual and team that raise the most in pledges. Riders must have a helmet and bike light to participate in the event. Most riders complete the 20-mile flat course in two hours. Early registration is $25 for adults and $15 for kids 17 and under; event-day registration for all ages is $30. San Diego’s "6 to 6" program is overseen by the City of San Diego’s Community and Economic Development Department, in partnership with area school districts. The program is committed to opening community schools before and after normal school hours to provide a safe place where elementary and middle school-aged children and youth can receive academic assistance and tutoring, and participate in recreational activities such as arts, crafts and sports while their parents are at work. Redevelopment is one of the most effective ways to breathe new life into deteriorated areas plagued by social, physical, environmental or economic conditions that act as a barrier to new investment by private enterprise. The City of San Diego Redevelopment Agency consists of three divisions: the City Redevelopment Division (which provides overall agency management and is housed in the City of San Diego Community and Economic Development Department), the Centre City Development Corporation and the Southeastern Economic Development Corporation.
