According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the population of the City of San Diego is 1,223,400. Of those, 193,986 (5 years and over) have some type of disability. That's nearly 18% of San Diego's population and this number is increasing as the population ages.
The City's Disability Services Department was established in 1991 per the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. Our mission is to ensure that every facility, activity, benefit, program and service operated or funded by the City is fully accessible to, and useable by, people with disabilities in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as other federal, state and local access codes and disability rights laws.
