Cyber Security AwarenessThe City of San Diego is proud to be a participant in the 9th annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month during October 2009, sponsored by the United States Department of Homeland Security, National Cyber Security Division (DHS / NCSD), the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC). This year's theme is: Our Shared Responsibility. There will be educational events taking place across the United States during October in support of Cyber Security Awareness. The purpose of having a month dedicated to Cyber Security Awareness, is to educate citizens about the potential dangers of using the Internet and Email, and the simple steps that can be taken to help protect yourself personally, as well as our local businesses and City government from cyber attacks, fraud, identity theft, and other malicious activities. You are encouraged to learn more about cyber security by checking the resources available through the links below – these sites provide a wealth of helpful tips and tools for you to protect yourself online and combat cybercrime. Key areas of concern nationally are identity theft and protecting children in their use of the Internet and Email. In addition to national events, the City of San Diego will maintain a cyber security display with handout information in the City Administration Building lobby (202 C Street, downtown San Diego) from October 5th through 16th, as well as conducting public education meetings in the community and for its employees. Brochures from the lobby display are also available below for download. The Police Department and Department of IT will make brief presentations (1) on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, 6:30pm, to the Tierrasanta Town Council meeting, held at the Tierrasanta Recreation Center, and (2) on Wednesday, October 28, 2009, 6:30pm, to the Serra Mesa Community Council meeting, held at the Serra Mesa Branch Public Library. 2009 Cyber Security Awareness Month Council Resolution (PDF: 1.2Mb) View a video message from President Obama promoting National Cyber Security Awareness Month and providing cyber security tips, which are critical in national efforts to get every American to secure the computers and networks they use.
