Sewer and Water
Why is the City of San Diego replacing the sewer and water mains in my neighborhood?
The City generally replaces the mains because they have worn out. Sewer and water mains are replaced as part of the same project to minimize the impact on community.
Why doesn't the City have the contractor place both the sewer and water mains in the same trench to save time and money?
Health codes prohibit using the same trench for both sewer and water mains because of possible contamination of the water main in case of a break.
Why doesn't the City have the contractor place both the sewer and water mains in different trenches in the same street and at the same time to save time?
To replace both mains at the same time would generally require closing the street because of the work area needed for two trenches.
Will I lose sewer service to my home during construction?
Sewer service is generally unaffected.
Will I lose water service to my home during construction?
If the water main serving your home is replaced, you will lose water for a few hours when the old main is by-passed and a few more hours when the new main is put in service. In both cases, you will be notified in advance by the contractor or the City when this is going to happen.
Who should I call if I have other questions?
You should contact the City's Resident Engineer on the Group Job in your neighborhood because he or she is the most knowledgeable person about that particular project. The Resident Engineer's phone number and the contractor's name and phone number are sent to each home in the area before construction begins. If you have any other questions or comments about the Group Job in your neighborhood, call the Group Job Hotline at (858) 573-5081.
