The project will construct sidewalks and street crossings to improve pedestrian access and safety in the vicinity of the Normal Heights Elementary School located one block east of the project. Currently, the intersection at the site is a very wide confluence of 6 neighborhood streets meeting in a broad intersection controlled by stop signs. Mountain View and Madison are curved streets meeting the intersection creating a unique set of traffic conditions unfamiliar to drivers. The intersection is so broad, that pedestrians must traverse long distances in the street. A large number of children use the intersection to access the elementary school. The condition of many of the sidewalks and driveways are cracked and damaged.
The project improvements include new curbs and gutters, sidewalks, cross walks, pedestrian ramps, street paving, street lights and landscaping. The purpose of the project is to calm traffic, upgrade curb ramps, and provide safer travel conditions for pedestrians in this highly trafficked area. The street will be narrowed, new pedestrian ramps will be installed, driveways will be extended to meet the new curb and gutters, and sidewalks will be located in the new space created by the curb relocation. Landscaping and mulch will be installed to cover the unpaved areas.
Construction Start: July 2011
Construction Finish: November 2011
The construction contract is for $364,828. Funding for the project is provided by a Federal, State and Local funds.
