Group Job 3008: Water Service Improvements Along Harbor Drive
Background
The City of San Diego is working to improve the water infrastructure and
overall quality of life for residents, businesses and visitors alike. Ultimately,
the City is replacing all aging and deteriorating cast-iron pipelines to
eliminate future water main breaks plus improve the quality of drinking
water.
On May 26, 2009, the City of San Diego Engineering and Capital Projects
Department began construction of Water Group Job 3008 along
Harbor Drive in downtown San Diego. The existing cast-iron mains are
nearly 60-years old and are at the end of their service life.
The project will:
- replace 17,979 feet of 16" cast-iron water mains
- improve service reliability
- minimize future water main breaks caused by aging pipes
- increase the size of existing pipes to better serve the area
The total cost of the project is estimated at $5,777,000. The funding is
provided by water rates and revenue bonds.
There are two sections for Water Group Job 3008 project
- Section 1: Group Job 532 runs along North Harbor Drive from West
Laurel Street south until it intersects Pacific Highway. On Pacific
Highway, it runs from F Street into Seaport Village.
- Section 2: Group Job 533 runs west along North Harbor Drive from
Laurel Street to Winship Lane, and from the Airport Terminal 2 exit
west to Lee Court.
Project Overview
Water Group Job 3008 is located in Council District 2 within the Centre City
community. The project will involve open trench replacement of the existing
water main. The majority of the replacement will be along the same
alignment as the original water main.
Traffic flow will be allowed during the hours of construction. Where
construction is occurring, a minimum of one lane of traffic will be provided.
Please adhere to temporary road and no parking signs. Business and
pedestrian access will be maintained.
Construction Schedule
Construction began May 26, 2009 and is anticipated to be completed by April
of 2010. All work south of Ash Street will be completed by the end of
October 2009.
