La Jolla Shores Lifeguard Station Project

Project Background

The existing La Jolla Shores Lifeguard Station is an aging, deteriorating facility that is undersized and no longer serves the needs of the Lifeguard staff nor the beach-going public. A new 1,485 square foot station will replace the aging facility and will provide a modern public safety facility for users of La Jolla Shores Beach and Kellogg Park. The project was designed in an inclusive process with the community and Lifeguard Staff and was created to improve public safety, maximize views from the park and parking lot, and minimizing the physical impact to the public boardwalk.

Project Overview

The project will construct a new 1,485 square foot state-of-the-art lifeguard station that includes an observation tower with a 270 degree view, a modern first aid room, male/female locker rooms, administration areas, and a staff ready room. Upon completion of the new station, which will be located closer to the parking lot, the existing lifeguard station will be removed - allowing a significant portion of Kellogg Park to have direct views to the ocean.

To support the new station, a new 650 square foot Rescue Vehicles Facility will be located within the parking lot near the beach access driveway. The location was selected to minimize the amount of travel distance between the vehicle storage area and the beach access driveway providing enhanced public and staff safety. This structure will replace the metal storage container that currently exists within the parking lot. Some parking spaces will be reconfigured.

The summer construction moratorium will be observed on this project. All community residents within 300 foot radius of the project will be notified by mail prior to the start of the construction phase. The project and the successful contractor will be introduced to the La Jolla Community Planning Association prior to start of the construction phase. The Parking lot will remain open during the construction phase. An approved traffic control plan will be implemented during construction.
