La Playa Storm Drain Replacement Project
Project Background
Two existing storm drains at the La Playa area of San Diego Bay once conveyed storm water across the beach to the bay. Both outfalls have failed and are allowing erosion to occur.
Project Overview
The project will remove the existing 18-inch and 30-inch reinforced concrete (RCP) storm drain pipe and the deteriorated steel support structures and replace them with concrete headwalls and concrete channels to convey storm water across the beach to the bay.
There should be minimal to no impacts to residents and businesses in the area. Material haul away and delivery will occur on Bessemer Street at the north end of the project and San Antonio Avenue at the south end. Construction activity will take place at the ends of the streets but it is not anticipated that either street will be closed or vehicular access impeded.
Benefits
The benefit of La Playa Storm Drain Replacement Project is that the bluff edge along the walking path and the beach will be protected from erosion caused by runoff from the storm drains, and the unsightly pipe and steel structures will be removed.
Cost
The construction contract is for $395,750.
