Linda Vista Community Water Group Job 909
Phase I & II

Background

The City of San Diego is working to improve the water infrastructure and overall quality of life for residents and visitors alike. To that end, the City mandates the replacement of all aging and deteriorating cast iron (CI) pipelines to eliminate future water main breaks plus improve the quality of drinking water.

The existing cast iron (CI) pipeline was installed during the mid 1950s and has been providing drinking water to the Linda Vista Community. Approximately 4 miles of existing CI pipeline located in Linda Vista areas will be replaced as part of this ongoing program. Water Group Job 909 will also bring the existing water mains up to current City standards by increasing the pipe diameters and establishing a separation from the sewerage system.

Project Overview

Water Group Job 909 is located in Council District 6 within the Linda Vista Community Planning area. The project consists of replacing approximately 11,267 linear feet of cast iron main for Phase I and approximately 9,779 linear feet for Phase II. The project will involve open trench replacement of the existing main. The majority of the replacement will be along the same alignment as the original main. Traffic flow will be allowed during the hours of construction. At the end of each day, the entire street will be reopened to normal traffic conditions.

The following locations will be impacted: Comstock St., Orr St., Osler St., Ulric St. (between Comstock St. and Morley St.), Fulton St., West Jewett St., East Jewett St. and Eastman St.

Coordination with schools (Montgomery Junior High, Linda Vista Elementary), Linda Vista Recreation Center, and Health and Human Services will be arranged to avoid any interruption in services.

The construction moratorium will be established as needed and implemented to minimize any impact to the communities during special events.

Construction Schedule

Construction is scheduled to start in late summer of 2010 and will be completed by summer of 2011. The total cost of the project for Phase I and II is estimated at $8.6 million and will be funded by water rates and revenue bonds.
