North Park Mini-Park and Associated Streetscape Improvements Project
Project Background
The North Park Mini-Park and Associated Streetscape Improvements Project is an important step in the redevelopment of the area surrounding the restoration of the Birch North Park Theatre, which includes the completion of the parking structure at North Park Way and 29th Street. The design will include the parcel directly behind the existing Birch North Park Theatre, to be designed as a mini-park. The design will also include the streetscapes surrounding the park, as well as those connecting the mini-park to University Avenue and to Jefferson Elementary School.
The Redevelopment Agency has transferred the park parcel to the City of San Diego, and has contributed funding for a Streetscape Master Plan. The design of the General Development Plan (GDP) for the park will utilize North Park Special Park Fees.
Project Overview and Scope of Work
North Park Mini-Park
Provides for the design of a GDP for an approximate 0.50 acre urban mini-park to be located between Granada Avenue and 29th Street, along North Park Way. The mini-park will be located behind the recently renovated North Park Theater and is expected to receive heavy community use as a central gathering space for passive recreational uses. The location of the park will provide a connection between the residential neighborhoods to the south and the Business District in which it is sited. Park amenities will be determined through the community input process.
Associated Streetscape Improvements
Provides for the design of a Streetscape Master Plan along Utah Street from University Avenue to Gunn Street, 29th Street from University Avenue to North Park Way, North Park Way from Utah Street to 29th Street, and Granada Avenue from University Avenue to North Park Way. Streetscape elements and amenities, as identified during the community input process, will tie the North Park Mini-Park, the Business District and the future Jefferson Elementary School Joint Use Improvements together, providing additional areas for community interaction.
Benefits
- The mini-park will provide valuable additional population-based park acreage, and will provide a link between the residential areas to the South and the Business District areas to the North.
- The streetscapes will begin to link residential areas with community assets, including the Business District, Jefferson Elementary School, and the mini-park.
